ARTIST'S INTERVIEW:

FROM RUBLE TO REDEMPTION

SPOKANE & COEUR D'ALENE MAKEUP ARTIST

“Have you loved makeup all your life?”

Nope.

I was the little girl who was making pretend “stew” out of whatever I could find in our backyard. I climbed trees, stomped in puddles, rode my skateboard… I was a total tom boy: Vans skate shoes, baggy pants, and all! As an adult, I love feeling feminine, but I’m still not girly. I mean, fake nails make me feel like a cat wearing booties! But, I love the way makeup makes me FEEL: confident and beautiful.

“How long have you been doing makeup? Do you do it full time?”

I’ve been doing makeup since spring 2020! I work part time.  I also get to be a stay-at-home wife and mama, and homeschool our two young boys. I always tell people, “That’s my real job!"

“What got you in to makeup?”

I went through some very serious health issues between 2015 and 2019. I was so sick, we ended up moving in with my mother-in-law for about seven months. She and my mother would help care for our boys, while my husband was at work, since I often couldn’t. It was an incredibly dark time for me, mentally and physically. My husband suggested, nicely, I get a hobby - something I could do sitting or laying down. I started playing with my mother-in-law’s makeup, and started a little makeup collection of my own. I enjoyed being creative. I watched hundreds of hours of YouTube tutorials. I went on from there to get two different makeup certifications - just for fun! - never thinking of it as a business.

“So, what changed?”

How I FELT. While my physical condition didn’t change, I began to shift, mentally. I found more confidence. I felt beautiful for the first time in a really long time! I found myself craving that feeling, and wanting to give that feeling to others. After I finish someone’s makeup I always ask, “How do you feel?” Their response is usually, “Oh my gosh… is that ME? I feel so beautiful!” It’s such a gift to me to - one - even be healthy enough to do this, and two, give this gift of feeling beautiful. It’s a privilege.

“Do you stay pretty busy with clients?”

I do! When I first started this business, I remember praying, “Ok, Lord. I will put in the work, but You need to bring me the clients.” He has been so faithful in that.
